ICH: A Global View
Hahnemann’s homoeopathy is an eminently humane healing art. It is a brilliant and elegant system with far reaching implications. At the ICH we endeavor to educate homoeopaths in the pure motivation and skillful means to use this system to benefit others and make a difference in the world. We live in a time when the world is fractured by violence, greed and prejudice. Both the real world and cyberspace are filled with dissension, polarized politics, and shattered trust. Natural and manmade disasters create untold suffering. In our interdependent web of existence, we desperately need to find ways to care for the earth and care for each other. Homoeopathy cannot solve all the world’s problems, but it can make an enormous contribution, in terms of both medical treatment and the homoeopathic understanding of health. Physical health does not exist in a vacuum; it is dependent on mental and emotional health. These in turn are strongly influenced by our families, communities, and the state of the world in general. People who are healthy on all levels will create a healthier world. For this to happen, we need to explore our potential as human beings, and raise the consciousness of health in all the choices we make.
With all the wonders of technology, we can spend our days bombarded with information, but disconnected from the real lives, needs and sufferings of the people around us, losing the skills of face to face interaction. The ICH is an oasis, a place of renewal, where students can unplug from the frantic world of random input to discover the deeper treasures within themselves. Using intelligence and imagination, they cultivate the ability to listen and understand. They develop equanimity and compassion that enables them to transcend the divides of political or religious beliefs, cultures, narrow interest groups or class and educational barriers. With greater concentration and focus, they are able to perceive, and perceiving, they are able to help.
We encourage students to build bridges with other forms of holistic healing and mainstream allopathic medicine. We urge them to creatively find the ways to enlarge the range of people served by homoeopathy, and the ways to meaningfully integrate homoeopathy, its principles and practice, into the larger medical system. We inspire them to educate people in taking responsibility for their health and the health of their families and communities. With a focus on re-establishing health rather than on fearing disease, on utilizing the natural self-healing capacity, rather than being dependent on drugs, big change can come to people’s lives. The ICH offers students the chance to be the agents of that change.
Our students have traveled to Africa, Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia, treating people in areas where homoeopathy has not been available. They have helped people in extreme conditions as well as those with longstanding chronic ailments, bringing case reports back to their fellow students. The ICH training has given them the tools to carry out humanitarian work in any part of the world, and so has transformed their lives and the lives of others.
